CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy is a student-centered approach to teaching in which the students' cultural strengths are identified and celebrated. This module will ground participants in the importance of CRP and how it can be implemented in the classroom.

- A brief review of CRP
- An exploration of how ableism and racism are intertwined, creating systems of oppression and the need for thoughtful, inclusive curriculum design.
- The three pillars of CRP explored in depth, particularly as they relate to Special Education.
- Identification of strategies for making curriculum more culturally relevant to students.
KNOWLEDGE-SKILLS-MINDSET
Knowledge:
- Teachers are able to articulate the ways in which students are oppressed by both racism and ableism
- Teachers can articulate the theory of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and its significance in changing the face of the classroom.
- Teachers can evaluate curriculum for cultural relevance.
- Teachers can identify and employ strategies for making curriculum more culturally relevant.
- Racism and Ableism, both systems of oppression, are intertwined and students identified with disabilities are often affected by both systems.
- Curriculum and practices should be culturally relevant and diverse.
IMMEDIATE CLASSROOM ACTION
Teachers will be able to evaluate current curriculum for cultural relevance and employ strategies to align their own curriculum with culturally relevant pedagogy.
