COURSE DESCRIPTION
Advocacy is a big part of special education. How to develop advocacy from an individual level all the way to the community level is explored in this module.

- Students identified with disabilities are sometimes discriminated against in both school and community settings.
- Self-advocacy can help students to stand up for themselves and their needs in any environment.
Skills:
- Awareness of situations that call for advocacy
- Identification of biases
- Teaching self-advocacy
Mindset:
- Students identified with disabilities must learn to advocate for themselves in the classroom, school, community. Part of the Special Educator’s role is to teach advocacy skills and invest students in this type of work.
- Mindsets of school personnel and community members may not always be favorable when pertaining to students identified with disabilities.

You will receive advocacy tools and practical applications for your classroom and student population, along with a guide for promoting advocacy and awareness in other school and community members.
