SETTING GOALS AND SELF-MONITORING
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Last year we discussed how to track IEP goals as a case manager. This module takes the focus goal-monitoring off teachers and shifts it to students. This module will explore how to teach students to set reasonable goals and provide resources for teaching students self-monitoring.

KNOWLEDGE-SKILLS-MINDSET
Knowledge:
- Teachers know that self-monitoring can be used by students in both academic and behavioral goals. Teachers know the components of a reasonable goal.
- Educators develop practices for teaching students how to set reasonable SMART goals and simple self-monitoring procedures.
- Educators can choose the best self-monitoring measure for individual students.
- Teaching students to take stock of their own goals and to set reasonable goals will help to empower students to take ownership of their education. Teaching self-management and self-advocacy skills are an important component of the special educator’s role.
